World Habitat Day was celebrated on 1st October 2012 at a local hotel in Karachi in collaboration with HANDS, NED University architecture and planning department, UK aids and UN Habitat.
World Habitat Day observed on the first Monday of October every year as per designated by United Nations to reflect on the state of our towns and cities and the basic rights of all, to adequate shelter and this day observance intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat. This year’s theme is “Changing Cities, Building Opportunities” UN-Habitat wants to draw attention to the need to plan our cities better because unplanned growth of cities leads to disorganized development and urban slump. When well planned, cities can continue to afford opportunities to both current and future residents.
Chairman HANDS Prof Gaffar Billoo draw attention to the need of social innovation for the development and mapping of organized construction plans with basic human facilities huge problems have been sighted by ignoring such thing he explained the efforts of HANDS providing shelters and entrepreneurship in rural areas while speaking at world Habitat day.
Founder President Bannhbeli Javed Jabbar focused on the need of model cities having fresh water, airy spaces, neat water and sewerage systems, proper communication facilities and basic services structure. Overly crowded city affects negatively the mental growth and also hurting peaceful environment.
Chairman Architecture and planning department NED University Prof Noman Ahmed said that for the better future and prosperity people leave the rural areas and move to the cities. Negligence of municipal laws by the authorities creating problems concern municipal authorities should work in an organized way to create an ideal environment of living.
Murtaza Noonari Youth representative UN Habitat Pakistan, Engineer Iqbal Ahmend Qureshi from Rotary Humanitarian Trust Pakistan and Inayat ullah Qureshi From Planning and development department Govt of Pakistan participated in open discussion about bringing changes and building opportunities.
Sara Akhtar Khan NED University and Dr Aslam Khan Chief Operating Executive HANDS were also presented their observation and provoke the insight of the theme “Changing Cities, Building Opportunities”.
