HANDS-PPAF Disability project

Health and Nutrition Development Society (HANDS) and Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) have started its disability program in seven districts of Pakistan including Swabi, Multan, Khairpur,and Karachi after the successful completion of disability project in the earthquake affected areas which are still continued in  Rawalakot and Mansehra. Several activities are designed for the person with disability (PWDs) to make them play effective roles in the society.

The designed dimensions of this program are:

Base line Survey

Camps for need identification of PWDs

MIS & Rehab data entry

Awareness raising session

Attendant ship trainings for family members of the several disabled

Independent living trainings

Skills trainings

Enterprise development training and business incubation

Teachers training

Capacity building of disabled person organization (DPOs)

HANDS-PPAF Disability project is started since April 2010 from three union councils Rehri, Ebrahim Hydri and Landhi of Bin Qasim Town Karachi, which is funded by Pakistan Poverty Alleviation fund PPAF. Initially HANDS conducted households’ survey in all three union councils, and arranged medical camps for disabled person (PWDs) in UC Rehri at rural health center Rehri and Lal Basti. Arranged need assessment medical camp for PWDs in UC Landhi. House to house token distributed and message communicated prior to initiate medical camp in above mentioned areas.

Total Population of Bin Qasim Town Karachi is 67843 that are UC Rehri 19888, UC Ibraheem Haideri 27825 and UC Landhi 20130. Disabled person found are 5137 which are 8% of total population this seems to be a very tragic situation and requires prompt action to be rendered.

HANDS-PPAF Disability project has provided devices to 660 disables till now and this project is ongoing to meet the challenges in order to save humanity from disability.
